Palm leaf engraving is a very ancient and traditional art of Odisha (Orissa) State. Engraves with an iron stylus on dried palm leafs results this beautiful piece of unique art form.
Decades ago, before the invention of any kind of Canvas or ink, this was the only way used for writing and to keep the records. The traditional Odia horoscope is a very fine example of use of this art which is basically called 'Jataka'.
With the proper selection of palm leaves and certain natural processing of it starting from making it dry and cut into required pieces the leaf gets ready for engrave which may take days to be finished. Once done then a layer of natural color is applied to make it prominent and to fill the engraved grooves. The story, mostly from the epics get printed naturally. At times the artist creates several layers which can be flipped showing a new story altogether. The level of detail and scale of work may amaze you but not the amazing talent of the artist.
